Storm Nation Foundation is not an endowed scholarship program. The money we award each year comes from individual contributors such as those shown below. Without them, there would be no fund.

Contributor: John Driver

In memory of his wife, Susan J. Driver

Susan was a staunch supporter of public schools. After graduating from Oregon State University, Susan had several interesting jobs including a position with the FBI in Washington DC, before she found her true calling working in the office at Reynolds Middle School in Fairview, Oregon. She loved the energy of the students and also connecting with parents when they came to the school. She was married to John Driver for 34 years from 1979 until her passing in 2013. John Driver moved to the Skyview neighborhood in 2016 and after learning of the scholarship program, could think of no better way to honor his wife than donating in her name.

Contributor: Whitney Mattocks

Whitney is the sister of 2020 Skyview graduate Payton May. It was Payton’s experience at Skyview that prompted Tom and Debra May to create the scholarship organization. Whitney saw first hand how the Skyview community supported Payton as a transfer student from the Seattle area. Whitney, a proud Washington State University graduate works at Nike and lives in Beaverton with her husband Chris and her daughter Garrity and son Drew.

Contributors: Diane and Marc Berg

Diane and Marc Berg had three children attend Skyview, Alex, Lauren, and Jordan. During their time at the school, Diane and Marc were deeply involved in both the Choir and Band parent organizations and fondly remember attending many football games so they could see the best part of the game: the marching band halftime show! Friends with Tom May for over 40 years, Diane enthusiastically signed on to be a member of the scholarship committee when the Mays started the organization in 2020. In addition to volunteering their time and energy, the Berg family are also financial contributors.

Contributors: Rick and Jennie Taylor

Rick and Jennie Taylor are long time residents of Vancouver, having moved to the area after both graduated from WSU in 1976. They did not have children attend Skyview but have known Tom May since Rick and Tom both were hired at The Columbian newspaper in June 1976 (Jennie and Tom are also both Aberdeen High School graduates). After reconnecting with Tom’s family when they moved to Vancouver in 2017 and following Payton’s journey through Skyview, the Taylors quickly stepped forward to be a part of the scholarship committee. Like the Bergs, they too give of both their time and wallet.

Contributors: Tom and Debra May

In the spring of 2020, Tom, and Debra May, were looking forward to their daughter, Payton May, participating in the Skyview graduation ceremony with her Storm classmates. But, while the storybook ending to her senior year didn’t happen due to COVID, Payton’s parents were still extremely grateful to Skyview and the Storm community for embracing Payton and helping her succeed as a transfer student from the Seattle area. They decided to start a scholarship program to show their gratitude and that effort is now entering its third year. Like the other committee members, the May family gives their time and their money to the fund with the goal of making this the premier scholarship organization in Clark County.

Contributor: Rik Shiiki

Along with Diane, Rick, Jennie, and Tom, Rik is a member of the “gang of five” who’ve known each other for over 40 years. Rik also worked at The Columbian before owning his own marketing company for many years. Rik is the creative leader of the group and responsible for the art and marketing aspects of our fund raising efforts. Need proof Rik and Tom have known each other a long time? That’s them meeting Donny Osmond back in the late 80’s. As a graduate of the University of Oregon, Rik is literally the odd “Duck” in our group as the other four of us are WSU Cougars.
